Hear from a recent client on her teeth whitening experience
with Newmarket Family Dental Care

Recently, a friend and patient of Newmarket Family Dental Care visited Dr Carolyn to discuss having her teeth whitened. Fiona Leng, who models for Red 11 modelling agency, wanted to whiten her teeth to ensure they remained light and pristine. When modelling is part of your career, it is important for your teeth to look the part when in front of the camera.

“I’ve always wanted to get my teeth whitened and NFDC was referred to me by a friend. It was easy to book an appointment online for my initial consult with Carolyn,” explains Fiona.

Newmarket Family Dental offers dentist-strength whitening treatments that are effective and affordable. During the initial consult, Dr Carolyn checked Fiona’s teeth and recommended the most appropriate treatment method. The consult included confirming the appropriate method chosen to suit Fiona’s individual needs, the level of tooth lightening desired, as well as discussing any concerns she had.

Teeth whitening before after | Newmarket Family Dentist“My main concerns were around teeth sensitivity and damage to my gums from the whitening process. Carolyn made the whole process very easy and comfortable, I felt safe and well looked after. She was also patient to answer all of my questions and concerns about the bleaching process.”

To start, Fiona filled in some quick forms including information regarding her dental care, and then Dr Carolyn and the NFDC team performed a thorough clean on her teeth. Prior to undertaking a whitening procedure, the teeth always require a professional cleaning procedure (scaling and polishing) to remove discolourations caused by plaque / calculus deposits and extrinsic stains such as tea / coffee / wine / coloured juices / smoking. If the bacterial deposits have resulted in gum infection (gingivitis or periodontitis) then this will need to be treated prior to commencing.

“During the course of this process, we found out I had 2 cavities, so Carolyn did fillings on them for me in order to start the whitening process,” explains Fiona.

The gels used at Newmarket Family Dental Care contain an active whitening ingredient (in Fiona’s case, hydrogen peroxide) that penetrates your enamel to get to discoloured molecules. Oxygen molecules from the whitening agents react with the discoloured molecules in your teeth, breaking the bonds that hold them together. The oxygen molecules spread, resulting in whitening the entire tooth. As a result, you are left with a brighter and whiter smile.

The Opalesence Go whitening treatment was chosen for Fiona’s procedure, which comprises the latest tray bleaching technology and selected dosage of 15% hydrogen peroxide. There is a lower dosage of 6% available too, however Fiona and Carolyn decided on the 15% treatment to aid in the best whitening outcome for Fiona.

Compared to over-the-counter and supermarket treatments, the whitening services provided by your dentist are safer and more efficient. The concentration of the bleaching agent in over-the- counter products is lower than what your dentist will use in the clinic.

“I’ve tried a shop-bought whitening product before, but the NFDC whitening treatment is easier and more effective. I also felt very informed and looked after throughout the process from start to finish,” says Fiona.

Overall, Fiona is very happy with the results from her treatment. Not only has she had her teeth professionally cleaned and cared for, she has a brighter, whiter smile and has been happy with the after-care support and expectations.

“Overall everything feels normal and there’s no pain. Occasionally when my teeth experience some sensitivity, I just cover them in Sensodyne afterwards for a few minutes and the feeling disappears. Carolyn has given me some easy at-home remedies and top tips for that moving forward, too,” smiles Fiona.

I’m always reluctant to go to the dentists, but Carolyn and her team had amazing energy and their professionalism and skill-set made it a pleasant and relaxing experience. I felt like they genuinely cared for my dental health and whitening outcome.”
