What is Minimally Invasive Dentistry?

Minimally Invasive Dentistry (MID) is the fastest growing movement within modern dentistry. MID is based on a medical model that controls the disease of dental caries first and then uses minimally invasive techniques to restore the mouth to proper form, function and aesthetics.

MID dentists, using magnification and advanced technologies to diagnose dental disease, to  remove the least amount of tooth structure, bone or soft tissue necessary to eliminate what is unhealthy or diseased. When tooth replacement is necessary, it is performed as conservatively, comfortably, and as beautifully as possible.

Dr Carolyn Langrell–Read is dedicated to dental disease prevention, intervention and patient education. dedicated to the health, function and appearance of oral tissue by preventing disease from occurring or intercepting disease progress with minimal tissue loss.

Minimally invasive dentistry is a new way to take care of your oral health. Years of scientific research have changed our view on dentistry in many different ways. The arrival of new technologies has made it possible to act according to these findings. Using MID techniques to diagnose decay, the tooth  is treated by combating the bacteria that cause the disease rather as well as  repairing the holes these bacteria have created. Dr Carolyn Langrell-Read uses minimally-invasive cosmetic dental treatments utilizing cutting edge composite art techniques to recreate nature. The use of Biomemetric Dental restoration techniques we are committed to preserve tooth structure and ensure the tooth has the best chance to provide you with long term service both in function and to enhance your smile for many years.

Translated literally, biomimetic dentistry means to copy what is life-like. Nature has provided the most successful and ideal properties to our natural teeth. When restoring damaged, broken, and decayed teeth, the goal is to return the tooth to its original strength, function, and aesthetics. Biomimetic dentistry accomplishes all of this in a conservative, strong, and attractive approach. Biomimetic dentistry treats weak, fractured, and decayed teeth in a way that keeps them strong and seals them from bacterial invasion. Careful sealing against infection removes the need for 60% to 90% of the crowns and root canals of traditional dentistry.

Why Minimally Invasive Dentistry?

MID is based on a medical model that controls the disease first and then uses minimally invasive techniques to restore the mouth to form, function, and aesthetics. The philosophy behind MID is respecting the health of oral tissue by preventing disease from occurring, or intercepting the disease process with minimal tissue loss.

MID allows dentists to become true physicians of the mouth, rather than tooth technicians. MID dentists continue to treat symptoms, but also manage the underlying disease and associated risk factors. MID focuses on the use of highly researched, leading edge, dental materials and products to control disease and to restore hard and soft tissue to the highest standard of form, function and aesthetics. The MID practitioner strives to use the most bio-mimetic and bio-compatible materials currently available.

Disease Risk Assessment

The two oral diseases that most dental practitioners face every day are caries and periodontal disease.

Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CaMBRA)

The latest research shows that caries is a pathogenic bacterial infection of the tooth’s natural biofilm and is a multifactorial disease. Measuring the bacterial load, learning the various contributory factors for each patient and assigning a risk level for each patient allows the practitioner to effectively help patients fight caries and the subsequent cavitations.

Periodontal Risk and Disease Assessment (PRADA)

Periodontal Disease is a host response disease caused by a bacterial infection and is a multifactorial disease that includes a genetic component. Understanding how the body fights this infection and chronic inflammation, the genetic component and implementing new treatment modalities, such as chemical curettage and laser treatment, allow an increase in reattachment of tissue and potential bone regeneration.

Patient feedback

  • As a very anxious dental patient I was recommended Carolyn Langrell-Read by a family member who happens to be a dental nurse herself, high praise in itself. I have now been a patient since 1986 and am extremely happy with her caring and professional manner. I required a significant amount of work to be done and have been well informed throughout each stage of the process. Over the past few years my attitude has changed since my first visit when I was terrified to even walk through the door, recently I was so relaxed that I nearly fell asleep in the chair and not due to sedation!! That is due to Carolyn’s patient, kind and thoughtful nature, it makes travelling from the North Shore very worthwhile indeed.

  • I have known Carolyn Langrell - Read for 6 years. In this time she has treated my gum disease, suggested that I should consider braces, (my bottom teeth were breaking my top teeth), and given me superior dental treatment. Her skill in filling, reconstructing, capping and saving teeth some that have been filled generously with amalgam in the past is extraordinary. Her manner is friendly and professional. She gives you an excellent explanation (both verbal and written) of the treatment she proposes or has achieved. Her equipment is excellent and this combined with her expertise enables her to achieve a very high standard of dental work I feel very confident that Carolyn will look after my teeth in the future and I can recommend her as an exceptional dentist.

  • Good morning Elaynor Thank you for the follow up call. The treatment has worked well and I have recovered fully. My long term association with your Clinic and repeated visits are a testimony of the good and professional care provided by Dr. Langrell-Read and her staff. I am always impressed with her eye for detail and the ability to listen and to communicate with her patient regarding the treatment planned and undertaken. I have recommended her services to my daughter in law.
